Mr Gould qualified from St Marys Hospital medical School at Imperial College London in 1989 with honours in all subjects and obtained the University of London Betuel medal for outstanding achievements in the final examinations. He then went on to train in general surgery, specialising in gastrointestinal surgery on the North West London training rotation. He was appointed as Senior Lecturer and Honorary consultant surgeon at Imperial College in 2000. He was Deputy Head of Department for teaching in surgery while at Imperial , responsible for the delivery of surgical teaching at an undergraduate level and the administration and running of final and 3rd year exams.
His research interests while a senior lecturer involved the application of interventional MRI in surgical practice, which involved performing some surgical procedures in the MRI environment for the first time in the world. This resulted in a number of publications in peer reviewed journals.
In 2004 he moved to Northwick Park Hospital as consultant laparoscopic, gastrointestinal and Gen Surgeon where he remains to this day. He is now clinical lead for emergency and general surgery. The emergency surgical unit at Northwick Park is one of the busiest in the country and under Mr Gould’s leadership has gained national and international recognition and advanced emergency surgical practice has been developed, including surgery for acute gallstone disease and laparoscopic bile duct surgery for obstructive jaundice caused by gallstones.
Mr Gould is also the deputy divisional clinical director for surgery and has long experience of management and administrative roles.
He is an enthusiastic and popular surgical trainer and an attachment to the emergency surgical unit at Northwick Park Hospital is highly sought-after by surgical trainees. He has taught on formal Royal College of surgeons courses in laparoscopic, emergency and general surgery and has been an invited speaker at a number of national conferences and events.
His clinical interests include all forms of emergency general and trauma surgery, together with elective surgery for most gastrointestinal conditions. He has a particular interest in Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstone disease and hernia surgery of all types and investigation and treatment of groin pain. He also has extensive experience of perianal surgery and in particular treatment of haemorrhoids and anal fissure. He also has expertise in the management of diverticular disease, functional bowel problems and pancreatitis. He also has a great interest in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and laparoscopic surgery for hiatus hernia.
Outside of surgery he enjoys dog walking, military history and airgun shooting.
