About Ms Sreekumari Pushpoth

Personal Profile

Ms Pushpoth is a Consultant Ophthalmologist, with a special interest in the management of patients with cataracts and retinal diseases. At Woodlands Hospital in Darlington, she sees NHS and self-pay patients.

She obtained her first post-graduate qualification in Ophthalmology (MS) in 2002 and won the prestigious Gold Medal. She undertook further training in various sub-specialties and completed her higher specialist training in Ophthalmology from the Northern Deanery. She was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough in 2014. At the prestigious London Moorfields Eye Hospitals, Ms Pushpoth worked with world-renowned ophthalmologists and successfully completed her post-graduate fellowship in Medical Retina.

Ms Pushpoth is an accomplished cataract surgeon who routinely performs complex cataract operations and intra-ocular lens implantations. She also performs YAG laser treatments when required. Ms Pushpoth is an expert in diagnosing and treating retinal diseases such as:

As part of managing retinal diseases, she offers intravitreal injections and laser treatments as appropriate. She is currently the Clinical Lead for the North Tees Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.

As an Ophthalmologist with a keen interest in research, Ms Pushpoth was awarded a master's degree by The University of Birmingham in 2018. This was on successful completion of her research project in macular degeneration. Ms Pushpoth has presented academic papers at various national and international conferences and has a number of publications to her credit.

As the Training Programme Director of Ophthalmology for the Northern Deanery, Ms Pushpoth is actively involved in ensuring high-quality training for the next generation of Ophthalmologists. In her role as an Examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London, she is highly committed to maintaining the quality of ophthalmology training in the country. She is a keen advocate of offering customised care to each individual patient that would meet their specific needs. She takes extra effort in making sure her patients are kept fully informed every step of the way and helps them to choose the most appropriate treatment options for their condition.

Ms Pushpoth draws immense encouragement from the highly positive feedback that she receives from her patients, as a constant testament to her compassionate and patient-centred approach.
