About Dr Sophie Barrett

Personal Profile

Dr Sophie Barrett is a Consultant Medical Oncologist with a special interest in treating patients with breast cancer. She works in the NHS at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and she sees patients privately at Ross Hall Hospital, Glasgow. Dr Barrett looks after patients receiving systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT), such as chemotherapy, endocrine therapy (hormone treatment), immunotherapy and targeted therapies. She plays a national leadership role in the development of NHS breast cancer services and she is also interested in the management of long-term breast cancer treatment toxicity, particularly menopausal symptoms.

Dr Barrett trained in Cambridge and London before moving to Glasgow in 1997 to complete her medical oncology training. In 2005, she was awarded an MD by the University of Glasgow, for work analysing markers of chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer. Dr Barrett is the West of Scotland Lead Clinician for breast cancer and she is the Clinical Chair of the Scottish Breast Cancer Clinical Management Pathways Editorial Group. She is also an Educational Supervisor for medical oncology trainees, a Clinical Appraiser and she is a recognised Greater Glasgow and Clyde Mentor.
