About Dr Soon Hoo Song

Personal Profile

Dr Song qualified from Edinburgh University and undertook postgraduate clinical and research training in Edinburgh, Yorkshire and Los Angeles. Since 2004, he has been a consultant physician and diabetologist in Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.

His clinical practice includes managing acute and chronic general medical conditions, heart failure, general diabetes conditions and specialist diabetes areas including antenatal diabetes, insulin pumps, diabetic renal disease, young type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk.

Dr Song has led on various clinical services such as antenatal diabetes, insulin pump, young type 2 diabetes, diabetic renal disease and heart failure. He has contributed to the guidelines for lipid and hypertension management in Sheffield. For his passion in diabetes care, he was appointed as Diabetes UK Clinical Champion.

For general medicine, he is involved in acute medical admissions at Northern General Hospital, Sheffield dealing with general medical conditions, heart failure, diabetes and endocrine problems.

In addition to clinical medicine, Dr Song is actively involved in postgraduate training and examination at local and national levels with his roles as RCP Tutor, RCP Edinburgh Regional Adviser for Trent, MRCP (UK) PACES Examiner, Question Writer for MRCP (UK) PACES and Exam Board member of MRCP (UK) Part 1 and Specialty Certificate Examination for Diabetes and Endocrinology. His research interest focused specifically on cardiovascular risk and complications in young type 2 diabetes and he has published widely in these areas.

With his clinical expertise, Dr Song is an expert member of the NICE Diabetes Committee and National Diabetes Audit Special Advisory Group for Young Type 2 Diabetes. For his research expertise, he is a grant reviewer for National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
