Dr. Simran Grewal is a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, with a specialist interest in complex inflammatory arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis, and enteropathic arthritis. He also has a strong background in sports and exercise medicine, reflecting a career-long commitment to improving musculoskeletal health and patient quality of life.
After graduating with distinction from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Dr. Grewal went on to complete his postgraduate training across several leading NHS trusts, including Guy’s and St Thomas’, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells, and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals. He gained extensive experience in both rheumatology and general internal medicine, developing a broad clinical perspective that allows him to deliver holistic care for patients with multi-system conditions. He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2016 and successfully completed the Rheumatology Specialty Certificate Examination in 2020.
Dr. Grewal also holds a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine, Exercise and Health from University College London, graduating with distinction. His early academic training included a BSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine from Queen Mary University of London, further underpinning his specialist knowledge of musculoskeletal disease and rehabilitation.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Grewal has been actively engaged in research, publishing in respected journals on subjects ranging from psoriatic arthritis and osteoporosis in men to immune reconstitution-induced sarcoidosis. He has presented his work at national and international conferences, including the British Society of Rheumatology (BSR) and the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR). He has also contributed to clinical trials, including as a sub-investigator for the BRAVE study, and maintains Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
Leadership and service development form a central part of Dr. Grewal’s practice. He has led the design and implementation of care pathways in axial spondyloarthritis and enteropathic arthritis across North East London, ensuring timely access to innovative therapies for patients. He has also been instrumental in driving service improvements through quality improvement projects, including the development of dedicated ambulatory care pathways and enhancements to clinical handover and multidisciplinary working.
Passionate about education, Dr. Grewal is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and regularly teaches undergraduate medical students, postgraduate trainees, and allied health professionals. He is a committed mentor and clinical supervisor, with experience in bedside, classroom, and simulation-based teaching. He has also contributed to the development of medical education programmes at King’s College London and Kent and Medway Medical School.
Fluent in Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu, Dr. Grewal is committed to breaking down barriers to care and ensuring his practice is inclusive and patient-centred. His approach is focused on working in partnership with patients, offering clear communication and shared decision-making to support long-term management of chronic rheumatological conditions.
