About Dr Simon Campbell

Personal Profile

Dr Campbell qualified from Birmingham University in 1994 with honours in Medicine.

After his initial training, he was offered a research fellowship in Edinburgh where he achieved an MD under the training of Professor Subrata Ghosh, examining immunomodulatory therapy in inflammatory bowel disease.

In 2001 he achieved a place in the Oxford Deanery where he continued to develop interests in IBD and drug therapy, while getting extensive training in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), coeliac disease as well as interests in advanced endoscopic techniques.

Then in 2004, he undertook an Advanced Endoscopy fellowship at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, receiving training from Professor Tony Morris. He trained in colonoscopy, endomucosal resection and ran the capsule endoscopy service there.

He has published and presented more than 100 original research posters and articles, and published books and chapters in the field of inflammatory bowel disease. He worked at Manchester Royal Infirmary as Consultant Gastroenterologist from 2006-2014 and became the IBD/Research Lead for the department in 2009. Dr Campbell is now a predominantly private practitioner with NHS appointments in specialist endoscopy and bowel cancer screening.

He is Honorary Senior Lecturer at both Salford University and Manchester University, and Scientific Advisor for Crohn's and Colitis UK.

Dr Campbell was also a Royal College Tutor for Manchester Royal Infirmary from 2012-2013, a BSG IBD Committee Member from 2012 - 2015, has been a BSG IPC Committee Member since 2015 and is an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist.

In 2013, he was appointed as Editorial Board Member for Crohn's and Colitis UK, and was made Fellow of Royal College of Physicians.
