About Mr Simon Harris

Personal Profile

Mr Harris has been an NHS Consultant General Surgeon in London (Hillingdon and Mount Vernon Hospitals NHS trust) for 15 years. He is a national expert in keyhole surgery, including upper gastrointestinal, colorectal surgery and colorectal cancer.

Mr Harris trained at Charing Cross Medical School, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He also has a BSc degree, and was awarded a higher, Master of Surgery degree (MS, St.George's Hospital, University of London) for research into the aetiology of colorectal cancer.

He has super-specialist interest in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, having trained and teached extensively at the International MATTU centre (Minimal Access Therapy Training unit), Addenbrooks Hospital Cambridge, and the Institute of Tele-Surgery, Strasbourg, France.

He is an expert in difficult and complex cases, in particular in patients who have had multiple previous surgeries, as well as recurrent hernias, sports hernia, and Gilmore’s groin.

Mr Harris has performed in excess of 3500 gall bladder procedures, and 2000 groin hernia operations by keyhole approach for inguinal, femoral, umbilical, and incisional hernias, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones, gallbladder polyps, biliary colic, and acute pancreatitis.

Mr Harris will take the time to discuss your individual holistic needs, including complex needs, and make a full evaluation of your issues with regard to evidence based surgery. He will discuss the best procedures to reduce post-opertive pain and get you back to work as soon as possible after surgery.

He will also have a full open discussion about different treatment options for your particular condition, including non-surgical options if appropriate and will take time to discuss particular concerns you may have about your condition or treatment such as the use of mesh in keyhole hernia repairs.

Likewise, if you have particular concerns about surgery, he will be happy to talk through these in an open and transparent discussion. He is happy to discuss repair of hernia without mesh, and use of the latest pain free mesh fixation techniques in addition to alternatives to surgery.

Mr Harris investigates all abdominal symptoms and conditions with blood tests, and modern imaging techniques including X ray, ultrasound, MRI, MRCP, and PET scans.

He also regularly carries out endoscopy and colonoscopy, including polyp removal and exclusion of bowel and other cancers. If you prefer less invasive techniques of investigation, he will be happy to discuss these, including where appropriate CT virtual colonoscopy.

Mr Harris sees a lot of patients with diverticular disease, including for prevention and management of recurrent attacks of acute diverticulitis.

Mr Harris routinely carries out investigation of patients with symptoms suspicious for abdominal and bowel cancer and keyhole operations for bowel cancer both privately and in the NHS. He is a core member of the Colorectal Cancer MDT panel at Hillingdon Hospital.

Mr Harris is also happy to see patients with anaemia, abdominal pain, stomach-ache or cramps, diarrhoea, constipation, anal pain and bleeding, haemorrhoids, anal lumps, anal fissure, ano-rectal sepsis, peri anal abscess, fistula in ano, and pilonidal sinus.
