Personal Profile

Ms Shafaque Shaikh is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with an Honorary Senior Lecturer status with the University of Aberdeen. Having done a PhD in Surgery from the University of Aberdeen, she completed her higher surgical training from Yorkshire having trained at centres of excellence like St James’ University Hospital, Leeds and Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.

She secured the prestigious Pelvic Floor and Intestinal Failure Fellowship at the world-renowned St Mark’s Hospital, London where she gained valuable and extensive experience in the management of complex surgical patients and functional bowel disease. She specialises in functional bowel diseases including obstetric anal sphincter injuries, faecal incontinence and rectal prolapse. She is proficient at advanced laparoscopic surgery for bowel disorders and is also trained in robotic bowel surgery.

During her training she held the prestigious NIHR Academic Clinical lectureship and subsequently the NIHR Clinical Trials Fellowship. She is currently leading various research activities including collaboration on National Clinical trials and is developing her research interests in minimally invasive surgery and functional bowel disorders. Her research mainly focusses on improving patient care pathways, health economics and surgical research methodology.

She has more than 25 peer-reviewed publications in notable medical journals and over 40 published abstracts and a book chapter (Click here to view publications). She has presented at various national and international meetings including several invited presentations.

She is actively engaged in training and education with medical students and surgical trainees. She is faculty member on training courses with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
