About Ms Shafaque Shaikh

Personal Profile

Ms Shafaque Shaikh is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. She is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen.
She holds a PhD in Surgery from the University of Aberdeen and she completed her higher surgical training in Yorkshire. During this time, she trained at leading centres including St James’ University Hospital in Leeds and Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

She was awarded the prestigious Pelvic Floor and Intestinal Failure Fellowship at the world-renowned St Mark’s Hospital in London, where she developed advanced expertise in managing complex surgical cases and functional bowel disorders.

Ms Shaikh also offers sacral neuromodulation therapy with the InterStim™ System, at Albyn Hospital. It is a medical treatment used to help improve faecal incontinence by stimulating the neural pathways that control bowel movements.

Specialist Expertise

Ms Shaikh specialises in functional bowel conditions, including:

  • Obstetric anal sphincter injuries
  • Faecal incontinence
  • Rectal prolapse
  • She is skilled in advanced laparoscopic and robotic bowel surgery, which she performs at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Advanced Training and Fellowships

During her training, she held both the NIHR Academic Clinical Lectureship and the NIHR Clinical Trials Fellowship. She currently leads and collaborates on national clinical trials, with research interests focused on:

Research and Academic Work

She has authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications, more than 40 abstracts, and a book chapter.  She has also presented her work at numerous national and international conferences, including invited talks.

Ms Shaikh is actively involved in teaching both medical students and surgical trainees. She is a faculty member on training courses with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
