About Dr Seau Tak Cheung

Personal Profile

Dr Seau Tak Cheung is a UK-trained Consultant Dermatologist with over 18 years’ experience at consultant level. His clinical practice focuses on inflammatory skin conditions and skin lesion assessment.

He graduated from Dundee Medical School in 2000, completing an intercalated degree in Pharmacology, and undertook specialist dermatology training in the West Midlands before his appointment as Consultant in 2007. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) since 2015.

He has held leadership roles within the NHS, including Skin Cancer Lead, Dermatology Clinical Director and Clinical Cancer Lead, in addition to positions in clinical research.

He has extensive experience in the assessment of skin lesions and pre-cancerous conditions and undertakes minor skin surgery. Dr Cheung now works exclusively in private practice in South East London.

Clinical Expertise

Dr Cheung provides specialist assessment and management, with particular experience in inflammatory skin disease and lesion evaluation. His areas of practice include:

  • Inflammatory skin conditions such as urticaria, psoriasis, eczema and seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Acne and rosacea (excluding isotretinoin treatment)
  • Skin lesion and mole assessment, including skin cancer diagnosis
  • Actinic keratoses and sun-damaged skin
  • Cryotherapy and minor skin surgery for appropriate lesions

He manages chronic and relapsing inflammatory skin disease through optimisation of topical and appropriate systemic treatments in line with current UK guidance. Where indicated, he collaborates with subspecialist colleagues for patients who may require advanced systemic or biologic therapies, specialist surgical input or investigations such as patch testing.

Research and Guideline Contribution

Dr Cheung has received recognition from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the UK’s largest funder of health and care research, including a NIHR Leading Commercial Principal Investigator Award. As a regional Dermatology NIHR Co-Lead, he supported the development of clinical dermatology research and promoted participation in high-quality clinical studies within the region. He has also participated in UK multicentre clinical trials in conditions such as psoriasis and vitiligo.

He has contributed to national clinical guidelines and high-level evidence reviews through the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and the Cochrane Skin Group. This includes authorship of BAD guidelines for the management of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in situ (Bowen disease), involvement in Cochrane systematic reviews evaluating modalities for melanoma staging, and reClinical Interestsviews of interventions for hyperhidrosis.

In addition, he has contributed to national dermatology audits published in peer-reviewed journals, including work on non-melanoma skin cancer excision and isotretinoin prescribing.

Dr Cheung is currently involved in the development of a further British Association of Dermatologists guideline.

His involvement in guideline development, audit and clinical trials has influenced his clinical practice. In keeping with this, he remains up to date with newly approved dermatological therapies and incorporates appropriate treatments into practice, including newer topical agents for acne and actinic keratosis.

He remains committed to continuing professional development and regularly attends national and international dermatology meetings to ensure his care reflects current clinical standards and developments.

Service Development

In previous NHS roles, Dr Cheung contributed to the development of specialist dermatology services, including establishing a photodynamic therapy service and leading the development of a dermatology clinical research unit with dedicated facilities and research nursing support.

Scope of Practice

Dr Cheung’s practice focuses on general dermatology and the assessment of skin lesions. Following, recent prescribing policy changes relating to isotretinoin, he no longer prescribes this medication.
