He was the Research Lead for the Department of Orthopaedics (SCH) from 2006, and is the Research Lead currently for Doncaster Orthopaedics Department and has been since 2004. In this role, he has been responsible for Research Governance; he also supervises PhD students in stem cell and bone research at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Children's Hospital.
Mr Madan is currently the Paediatric Limb Reconstruction Service Lead for Sheffield Children's Hospital. He qualified in General Surgery in 1996 (FRCS), MCh (orth) in 1997 and MSc (Orth Eng) 1999, completed an Open University MBA in 2000 and was certified to practice in New York after completing his D'Peds Ortho New York University in 2002. Mr Madan returned to the UK in 2004 to take up a Consultant position in Sheffield and Doncaster.
He learnt hip joint preservation techniques during his fellowship with pioneering surgeon Prof Reinhöld Ganz from Bern. He has also worked alongside other pioneering surgeons, including Marc Phillipon from Steadman Hawkins Institute in Vail, Colorado and Hassan Sadri from Switzerland, in the field of Hip Arthroscopy Surgery.
Mr Madan is a co-organiser of the prestigious Sheffield Chesterfield FRCS Orth national course, in addition to training fellows and orthopaedic surgeons to become future Consultants for prestigious UK Teaching Hospitals, and abroad. Mr Madan has also organised the prestigious Sharrad Society Meeting and run several courses and workshops in limb reconstruction and paediatric orthopaedics, arthroscopy, joint replacement and foot and ankle surgery.
He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, and written book chapters and review articles. Mr Madan is on the board of several journals to review articles or publications. He was awarded the Kaufmann gold medal for research from NYU in 2002, and Best Paper Award at the Nordic/Spinal Society and British Scoliosis Society in 1998. Mr Madan has been a guest speaker at numerous conferences around the world and was honoured and awarded the prestigious fellowship (FInstLM) from the Institute of Leadership and Management, UK in 2010.
His hobbies are mountain biking, hiking, countryside walking and observing natural life in the wild.
