Dr Sanjeet Kamath is a full-time Consultant Rheumatologist based at Salford Royal Hospital, Northern Care Alliance, with over 20 years of clinical experience managing the full spectrum of rheumatological conditions. His busy NHS clinical practice, where he assesses more than 1,600 patients annually, helps maintain his clinical expertise and acumen in diagnosing and treating both common and rare rheumatological disorders.
Dr Kamath studied medicine at Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai, graduating in 1991. He completed postgraduate training in General Internal Medicine at JJ Hospitals, Mumbai, in 1996, where he was awarded an MD in Internal Medicine. He subsequently completed specialist training in Rheumatology in the West Midlands. In December 2003, he was appointed as a Consultant Rheumatologist at Haywood Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent, where he gained extensive experience managing complex connective tissue diseases, contributed to the development of early inflammatory arthritis pathways, and established collaborative links with other specialties.
During his time there, he also recruited patients to a number of clinical trials involving inflammatory arthritis, lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, and vasculitis.
In June 2016, Dr Kamath joined Salford Royal Hospital, Northern Care Alliance. Since then, he has established a combined clinic with renal physicians and participates in a weekly Vasculitis and Lupus multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, providing specialist rheumatology input. He also represents the Northern Care Alliance at the regional Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) MDT.
His specialist interests include early inflammatory arthritis and connective tissue diseases such as lupus, vasculitis, and Sjögren’s syndrome. Alongside these specialist services, he runs general rheumatology clinics, assessing and treating patients with conditions including gout, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, sarcoidosis, and IgG4-related disease.
Dr Kamath has a keen interest in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and is actively involved in teaching. He is the Trust Lead for Rheumatology at Salford Royal Hospital, Northern Care Alliance, and served as Associate Foundation Programme Director from 2018 to 2024. He is also an Honorary Clinical Lecturer (Teaching) at the University of Manchester.
