About Mr Sam Tomkins
Personal Profile
Mr Sam Tomkins is a Specialist Orthoptist with more than 20 years’ experience in adult and paediatric orthoptic practice. He is based at Meriden Hospital in Coventry, where he provides specialist assessment and treatment for patients with eye movement, binocular vision and neuro-ophthalmic conditions.
Alongside his role at Meriden Hospital, Mr Tomkins is the Neuro-ophthalmology Lead Orthoptist at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). He works closely with ophthalmology, neurology and neurosurgery teams to support patients with complex visual and eye movement disorders.
Mr Tomkins qualified from the University of Liverpool in 2006 with a first-class honours degree in Orthoptics. He was awarded the Trimble Prize for the best final-year dissertation for his research into spatial neglect.
He began his career at University Hospital Coventry and St Cross Hospital in Rugby, where he gained extensive experience in orthoptic assessment and management and later led the Visual Field service.
He subsequently spent seven years at the internationally recognised Neuro-ophthalmology Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. As an Advanced Orthoptist, he worked within the UK's largest neuro-ophthalmology unit and supported services connected with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine.
In 2020, Mr Tomkins returned to University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire to take up a senior role within the neuro-ophthalmic orthoptic service.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Tomkins is committed to education and professional development. He regularly teaches healthcare professionals and trainees on ocular motility, strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology, sharing his specialist knowledge and experience.
