About Sally Ameen

Personal Profile

Ms Sally Ameen MBBS, BSc, FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with subspecialist expertise in glaucoma and complex cataract surgery. She is recognised for her skill in advanced glaucoma procedures and her leadership in ophthalmic education and service innovation.

Ms Ameen completed her pre-clinical medical training at St Andrew’s University with distinction, followed by clinical studies at St George’s, University of London. Her ophthalmic training took place in the North Thames London Deanery, including prestigious rotations at both Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Western Eye Hospital. She went on to complete her final year of training with a subspecialist focus in glaucoma before taking up her current consultant post in central London.

She offers a full spectrum of glaucoma treatment options, including trabeculectomy, Baerveldt and Ahmed tube surgeries, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), and laser peripheral iridotomy. She has particular expertise in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), often performed in conjunction with cataract procedures to reduce dependence on eye drops. These short, safe procedures are done under local anaesthetic and allow patients to return quickly to daily life. Ms Ameen is also highly experienced in complex cataract surgery and emergency ophthalmology.

Alongside her clinical work, Ms Ameen is deeply committed to medical education. Her interest began early in her career and led to the completion of an MSc in Clinical Education during her training. She currently mentors and oversees more than 20 ophthalmology trainees across various levels, and has held the position of College Tutor for over three years. In her wider professional leadership, she serves as Secretary for the Ophthalmic Division of the Royal Society of Medicine and regularly organises, chairs, and teaches on national and international courses.

Ms Ameen is also engaged in ongoing research and has contributed to several major UK trials, including the Treatment of Advanced Glaucoma Study (TAGS) and the EAGLE trial. She has published two book chapters, including works on visual field interpretation and glaucoma diagnosis, and presented at numerous national and international scientific meetings.

As part of her commitment to innovation in healthcare delivery, she helped lead the development of a virtual glaucoma clinic model. This initiative allows stable patients to be reviewed remotely, improving clinical capacity and reducing wait times, while maintaining high standards of care and safety.

Currently serving as the Quality and Safety Lead for ophthalmology within her NHS trust, Ms Ameen remains focused on advancing best practices and ensuring excellent outcomes for her patients. She is known for her compassionate, patient-centred approach and for guiding her patients through long-term treatment journeys with care and clarity.

Whether in the operating theatre, the clinic, or the classroom, Ms Ameen combines clinical precision with a deep commitment to improving lives and elevating standards in modern eye care.
