Dr Shafeek is a highly experienced Consultant Haematologist with specialist expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and blood cancers. He practices privately at Droitwich Spa Hospital and Priory Hospital Birmingham, and also works within the NHS at Worcestershire Royal Hospital as part of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
He has been a Consultant Haematologist since 2002 and has extensive experience managing both malignant (cancerous) and non-malignant blood conditions.
Dr Shafeek completed his specialist Haematology and Haemato-oncology training on the West Midlands regional training programme, starting in 1994. During this time, he gained broad experience across all aspects of haematology, including complex blood cancers and general blood disorders.
This comprehensive training provided a strong foundation in both clinical care and laboratory-based haematology practice.
Dr Shafeek has held several senior leadership roles throughout his career. Since 2009, he has served as Clinical Director for Haematology and Oncology at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
In this role, he provides strategic leadership for haematology services across Worcestershire and acts as lead consultant for the haematology team. He is responsible for overseeing service development, clinical standards, and the delivery of high-quality patient care.
He has also been an active member of the Worcestershire Oncology Project Team since 2010, contributing to the redesign and improvement of cancer services across the county.
Dr Shafeek has a specialist interest in blood cancers, particularly myeloma and lymphoma. He is also experienced in the management of leukaemia and myeloproliferative disorders.
He is the Principal Investigator for several major national clinical trials at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. These include studies such as AML16, AML17, Myeloma IX, Myeloma XI, RATHL, PACIFIC, and PASS. His involvement in clinical research helps ensure patients have access to the latest advances in haematology treatment.
Dr Shafeek is the lead clinician for countywide anticoagulation services. He established secondary care anticoagulation clinics and developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) pathways to improve patient care and treatment safety.
He is also Deputy Chair of the Trust-wide Thrombosis Committee and plays an active role in thromboprophylaxis programmes and risk assessment across both hospital and community settings.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Shafeek is a Senior Lecturer in Haematology at the University of Birmingham, a position he has held since 2005. He is actively involved in teaching and research, with a focus on blood cancers and haematological disorders.
Dr Shafeek combines clinical expertise, leadership, and research to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care. His approach focuses on accurate diagnosis, modern treatment options, and supporting patients through every stage of their condition.
