About Dr Salim Shafeek

Personal Profile

Dr Shafeek is a highly experienced Consultant Haematologist whose main clinical practices are based at Droitwich Spa Hospital in Worcester and Priory Hospital in Birmingham. He also works at Worcestershire Royal Hospital as part of the Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust, where he has been a Consultant Haematologist since July 2002.

He undertook his Haemato-oncology training on the West Midlands regional rotation from 1994, gaining extensive experience across all aspects of malignant and non-malignant haematology.

Dr Shafeek has served as Clinical Director for Haematology and Oncology at Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust since 2009. In this senior leadership role, he oversees clinical haematology services across Worcestershire, providing strategic direction and acting as lead consultant for the haematology team.

He is also Senior Lecturer in Haematology at the University of Birmingham, a role he has held since 2005. Through this academic position, he remains actively involved in research and teaching, with a focus on blood cancers including myeloma, lymphoma, leukaemia, and myeloproliferative disorders.

Dr Shafeek has played a key role in regional cancer service development. He has been a member of the Worcestershire Oncology Project Team since 2010 and contributed significantly to the restructuring of cancer services across the county.

He is also the lead clinician for countywide anticoagulation services, having established secondary care anticoagulation clinics and DVT pathways. In addition, he serves as Deputy Chair of the Trust-wide Thrombosis Committee and is actively involved in thromboprophylaxis programmes and risk assessment initiatives across both acute and community healthcare settings.

His specialist clinical interests include myeloma and lymphoma, and he serves as Principal Investigator for multiple national clinical trials at Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust. These include AML16, AML17, Myeloma IX, Myeloma XI, RATHL, PACIFIC and PASS studies.

Through his combined NHS and private practices at Droitwich Spa Hospital in Worcester and Priory Hospital in Birmingham, Dr Shafeek provides expert haematology care with a strong focus on cancer diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials, and patient-centred management of complex blood disorders.
