About Mr Robert Peter Sutcliffe

Personal Profile

Robert studied Medicine at Cambridge University and after basic surgical training he undertook a period of research into liver cancer which culminated in being awarded a Doctorate of Medicine degree. Robert underwent higher surgical training in the South East, which included specialist fellowship training in Liver and Pancreatic Surgery at Kings College and Royal London Hospitals. He was appointed as a Consultant in Liver and Pancreas Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham in 2011. During his first year as a consultant, Robert embarked on a Fellowship in Laparoscopic (keyhole, minimally invasive surgery) Liver Surgery in Seoul, South Korea. Robert has also received training in robot-assisted liver and pancreas surgery.

Robert is currently the Lead for HPB Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and has played a key role in the development of the laparoscopic programme, which is now one of the busiest programmes in the UK. Robert’s practice encompasses the full breadth of liver and pancreas surgery, and in addition to his expertise in laparoscopic surgery, he also has a major interest and expertise in cancer surgery, having carried out over 600 major liver and pancreas procedures as a consultant. Robert has also implemented a laparoscopic adrenalectomy service in Birmingham, which is currently one of the largest adrenal services in the UK. Robert has a collaborative link with The Endometriosis Clinic and treats patients with diaphragmatic endometriosis.
