Mr Richard Stirling is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington. Here, he sees NHS, privately insured and self-paying patients.
He has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist for over 20 years. He specialises in cataract surgery, and has undertaken many thousands of these operations.
He qualified from Leicester Medical School and started his ophthalmology training in Newcastle. Prior to this, he spent a year teaching human anatomy and cell biology to medical and dental students at Newcastle University Medical School. Mr Stirling completed his ophthalmology training in both Nottingham and Leeds, and then undertook a Fellowship in Corneal Surgery in Adelaide, Australia under the tutorship of world-renowned surgeon, Professor Doug Coster.
Mr Stirling is a fully-accredited eye surgeon. He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist to Darlington Memorial Hospital and the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton in 1998. He was Clinical Lead for the Ophthalmology service and also Clinical Tutor. Mr Stirling has taught numerous eye surgeons in training and has spent 10 years as an Examiner in Ophthalmology for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He worked as a full-time NHS consultant, performing high-volume and complex cataract surgery before deciding to work full-time at Woodlands Hospital in 2019. He is a meticulous surgeon and devoted to giving his patients the very best care they can receive.
