About Mr Richard Slater

Personal Profile

Mr Slater qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 1993.

In 1998, he then undertook a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, and specialist training in Leeds, Nottingham and Sheffield. He completed his MD Thesis in 2002, with research on colorectal cancer secondaries. Later in 2006, Mr Slater did a Clinical Fellowship in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at St Mark’s Hospital. That same year, he was appointed as Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Rotherham Hospital.

Since then, Mr Slater has developed an interest in developing Peri-Operative Care techniques and has successfully introduced an Enhanced Recovery Programme into Rotherham Hospital. He has been actively involved in providing surgical training, particularly in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. He was an active trainer in the Laparoscopic Colorectal Preceptorship Programme (LapCo), providing training to established Consultants. He is also an active trainer in endoscopy, and has trained many medical and nurse endoscopists to independent practice.

Mr Slater has also been Lead Clinician for Endoscopy at Rotherham Hospital, successfully navigating through 2 JAG visits. Since 2013, he has been Chief Clinical Information Officer/Associate Medical Director. He is involved in setting and delivering the Trusts’ digital strategy.
