About Mr Richard Lovegrove

Personal Profile

Mr Richard Lovegrove is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with an NHS post at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. He specialises in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgical techniques and uses enhanced recovery programmes to help support the best possible outcomes and faster recovery for his patients.

He graduated from King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed his early surgical training in the North West Thames region of the London Deanery. He then undertook a research degree at Imperial College London, focusing on outcomes following ileal pouch surgery. During this time, he helped establish the UK National Ileal Pouch Registry, which is now used in centres across Europe to support clinical practice and research.

Mr Lovegrove completed his higher surgical training in the Oxford Deanery, including specialist experience on the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) surgical unit at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. He went on to become Senior Clinical Fellow in IBD Surgery in Oxford, further developing his expertise in complex bowel conditions.

He also completed an international fellowship in colorectal surgery at the University of Toronto. During this time, he worked at Mount Sinai Hospital and St Michael’s Hospital, gaining advanced experience in complex inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal surgery.

Mr Lovegrove has a strong academic background and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and national and international reports. He has also presented his work at both national and international conferences.

Clinical Interests

My clinical interests include the surgical management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), the management of anal fissures and fistulas, haemorrhoids, diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy as well as general surgical procedures including laparoscopic and open hernia repairs.
