Dr Butterworth has been a consultant neurologist at Milton Keynes University Hospital & Oxford University Hospitals since 2001 as well as holding honorary senior clinical lecturer status with the University of Oxford. 

Prior to this time his registrar training was in London and incorporated a 12-month training fellowship in Perth, Australia. Over and above his clinical commitments, Dr Butterworth has an interest in medical education and has held training leadership roles at both regional and national levels. 

Currently, he is the Director of Medical Education at Milton Keynes University Hospital and is also a clinical examiner for the MRCP (UK) postgraduate examination.
