Mr Richard Bryant is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Sheffield. He specialises and treats a wide variety of shoulder and elbow problems at the Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield.
Originally from Sheffield he went to study medicine at King’s College London. After completing a degree (BSc) in biomedical science he qualified in medicine in 1997. Working initially in the South East, he returned to the Sheffield region to commence his surgical training, and then completed his higher surgical training specialising in trauma and orthopaedics. His training was then completed by a yearlong fellowship in upper limb surgery at the University Teaching Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire.
In 2009 he was appointed at Rotherham Hospital in 2009 as a consultant with a special interest in shoulder and elbow surgery and has worked in the region ever since.
In 2015 Mr Bryant was also appointed by the Sheffield Children’s Hospital to provide a specialist multi-disciplinary clinic to treat children with complex shoulder and elbow problems.
Special Interests
His specialist interest is shoulder and elbow surgery, providing a comprehensive range of open and arthroscopic treatments for a wide variety of conditions. This includes advising and operating on patients with a huge range of problems relating to both trauma and degenerative conditions at all ages. As well as practicing as a surgeon he has also been clinical effectiveness lead at Rotherham Hospital for 5 years and clinical lead for the orthopaedic department for over 3 years. With an interest in management Richard has now become a director of Sheffield Orthopaedics Limited, providing high quality orthopaedic healthcare across the Yorkshire region.
Teaching and Training
Mr Bryant has enjoyed teaching to all levels of medical staff and has been faculty on regional and national courses, including shoulder arthroscopy workshops at the Royal College of Surgeons in London, chairing the numerous Acumed “Upper limb trauma” courses, and lecturing on other industry led instructional courses. He also set up a shoulder training course specifically for theatre staff. Mr Bryant is currently a trainer to the future orthopaedic surgeons and is waiting to become an FRCS examiner.
