He has extensive experience diagnosing and managing conditions including asthma, COPD, emphysema, chronic cough, pulmonary embolus, bronchiectasis, lung infections, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, obstructive sleep apnoea and occupational lung disease.
Dr Barraclough is currently the lead physician for specialist COPD services at the Wythenshawe Hospital where he runs the lung volume reduction service. He sees referrals from across the region and chairs the emphysema MDT where patients are identified for bronchoscopic lung volume reduction using Zephyr valves or lung volume reduction surgery. He is the only physician able to place the Zephyr valves under conscious sedation.
Dr Barraclough also leads the pulmonary vascular team. He runs weekly specialist clinics reviewing all patients diagnosed with pulmonary emboli and has written the trust wide guidelines on managing acute PE. He also delivers a specialist pulmonary hypertension clinic where he reviews patients with suspected pulmonary hypertension including idiopathic disease as well as PH lung and heart disease. He undertakes a regular pulmonary vascular MDT with the team in Sheffield which is our local specialist centre.
Dr Barraclough is an Associate of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and delivers a regular occupational lung disease outpatient clinic where he sees patients with suspected occupational asthma as well as asbestos related conditions, silicosis and other work related conditions. He is also a founder member of the Manchester Occupational Lung Disease MDT. He has previously delivered a regular general respiratory clinic and now provides this on an ad hoc basis. He is a core member of the respiratory team providing in-patient services and has extensive experience managing acute respiratory conditions.
