About Dr Rehab Awad

Personal Profile

Dr Awad is the Clinical lead Speech and Language Therapist at University Hospital Lewisham, London, UK since 2009. She leads the voice services for both adults and children in the Speech and Language Therapy Department for patients with voice disorders.

She also provides voice therapy input in the Multidisciplinary voice clinic, being the main therapist providing pre- & post-operative voice rehabilitation for patients who undergo phonosurgery. She has been leading the Parallel Voice Clinic at UHL since 2011 which provides diagnostic and treatment nasoendoscopy.

Dr Awad has been working as an independent voice therapist in the private sector since 2011, providing services at Blackheath Hospital (Southeast London) and in independent therapy rooms as well as remote (online) services.

Education

Dr Awad graduated from Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University in 1996, she trained as a phoniatrician (in speech and language therapy and laryngology) in Cairo university hospital between 1997 & 2000 as a Senior SHO and achieved MSc and MD in Phoniatrics Sciences from the same university in 2000 and 2008 respectively. Rehab studied voice disorders at UCL and achieved a post-grad diploma in 2005.

Experience

As the lead therapist at University Hospital Lewisham, Rehab has been working with patients with voice disorders for over 15 years both adults and paediatrics. With a complex caseload, she has been managing many challenging voice disorders successfully by developing individually tailored therapeutic programs for patients with voice disorders. Dr Awad has a long experience working with professional voice users (both children and adults) who have been experiencing voice problems whether of functional causes, or structural problems, she has a particular interest working with professional voice users recovering from voice surgery helping them restoring a successful professional career.

Rehab has been a great believer in the value of working within a multidisciplinary team, understanding the great benefits of working in collaboration with other professionals in the field of voice to achieve the best results for her patients. She has been regularly working along side experienced laryngologists, expert vocal rehabilitation coaches, talented physiotherapists and osteopaths as well as liaising with singing teachers to aid their work with their clients.

Rehab has also aided the development of FEES (Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow) Services at University Hospital Lewisham, providing training, supervision and clinical governance to the service as well as regular outpatient FEES clinics.

Teaching

She is a Visiting Associate Professor of Phoniatrics Sciences at Kasr Alaini Hospital, Cairo University since 2017 providing regular lectures and hands-on training for post-graduate phoniatricians. She regularly provides lectures at Guildhall School of Music for both undergraduates and post-graduate students for all singing genres. She has been a visiting lecture at Greenwich University for the post-grad speech and language course between 2017-2019.

Affiliations

Rehab is a member of the Royal College of the Speech and Langugae Therapists. She is a member of the British Voice Association (BVA), The British Larygological Association (BLA), The Union of European Phoniatricians (UEP), The European Laryngological Society (ELS) and the Confederation of Oto-rhino-Laryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (CEORL- H&N) and various Voice Clinical Excellence Networks (CENs). Rehab has served as the treasurer of the British Voice Association between 2021-2023, has been a member of the BVA council since 2021 and a member of the BVA Educational Working Party since 2018.

Research

Rehab is also an active researcher with publications in national and international scientific journals in the field of voice since 2015. She has also contributed to the RCSLT guidelines/position paper for the Endoscopic Examination of the Larynx by speech and language therapists. Most recently, she co-authored two chapters in the recent edition of Scott-Brown's Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Book.

With passion for voice and voice disorders and an experience of more than 20 years in working with voice disorders, Rehab has been an active national and international speaker in the field in various British, European and International conferences for the last 15 years. She has also provided various instructional courses and chaired multiple research sessions and round-tables in various conferences and study days.

Rehab has been an associate editor of the Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology since 2022.

Hobbies and Interests

Rehab has a passion for cooking and baking, she enjoys regular long nature walks as well as being a very keen reader.
