About Mr Raymond Liow

Personal Profile

Mr Liow is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington. He sees self-pay and insured patients.

He undertook specialist training in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery which ensued in the Northern Rotation in Newcastle from 1996 to 2002. During that time, he undertook a fellowship in Shoulder and Sports Orthopaedics in Edinburgh.

He was also educated in Oundle School in Peterborough, and graduated with a medical degree from Charing Cross Medical School, University of London in 1991.

His experience in shoulder surgery was further enhanced through a travelling fellowship to Canada and the USA in 2002, where he had the privilege of working with leading sports orthopaedic surgeons at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, USA and The University of Toronto, Canada. He was greatly influenced by this experience and many of the practices that he observed have been incorporated into his practice.

Mr Liow has nearly 20 years' experience as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon. This was initially at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton and James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. In 2016, he moved to North Tees and Hartlepool Hospitals, where he now works in a thriving upper limb unit. He strongly believes that a modern shoulder surgical service should provide proven contemporary surgical techniques, but with the support of a robust multi-disciplinary team.

He treats shoulder conditions such as frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, rotator cuff disorders and arthritic conditions of the joints around the shoulder. He believes that many shoulder conditions can be successfully treated with modern but well-proven arthroscopic (keyhole) techniques. Prosthetic replacements of arthritic or worn-out joints are also offered where appropriate.

He has a particular interest in shoulder instability (dislocations) and sports-related injuries, and relishes in the challenge of treating complex shoulder instability in high-demand patients. These include sportspersons, both amateurs and professionals alike. He has also had the experience of treating high-demand military personnel.

Mr Liow is committed to providing a high-quality service and strongly believes in the reflection and review of his outcomes with audit and research. Nearly every aspect of his surgical practice has been reviewed. The results of rotator cuff repairs, acromioclavicular excisions, frozen shoulder surgery, shoulder instability surgery, proximal humeral fracture surgery and shoulder replacements have been presented in national meetings and international forums. He also publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals.
