About Dr Pui San Yap

Personal Profile

Dr Yap graduated from the University of Aberdeen. She completed her postgraduate training in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and General Internal Medicine in the North of Scotland.

In 2017, she passed the Royal College of Physicians’ Endocrinology and Diabetes Specialty Certificate Examination. She became an NHS Consultant in Aberdeen in 2020 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2021. She currently serves as Clinical Lead in General Internal Medicine.

Dr Yap is dedicated to providing personalised, patient-centred care. She takes a practical approach, helping patients understand their condition and develop tailored treatment plans that suit their individual needs.

Areas of expertise

Dr Yap provides care across a wide range of conditions, including:
  • General diabetes management
  • Insulin pump and other diabetes technologies
  • Endocrine (hormonal) conditions
  • General internal medicine
  • Special interest in adrenal gland disorders, including adrenal insufficiency or Addison’s disease and adrenal lesions.

She also offers investigation and management of a wide range of endocrine conditions including:

  • Disorders of thyroid
  • Calcium and parathyroid
  • Pituitary and hypogonadism such as testosterone deficiency.

She is also an experienced General Physician who is involved in management of general medical patients in the medical ward and acute medical emergencies.

Clinical approach and quality improvement

Dr Yap is committed to delivering pragmatic, evidence-based care. She has led and contributed to several quality improvement projects. Her work includes:

  • Working closely with specialist endocrine nurses and other specialties in steroid education and introduction of the steroid emergency card as per NHS Improvement national patient safety alert recommendation.
  • Implemented local clinical guidelines for adrenal incidentaloma and management of patients on continuous subcutaneous insulin pump in inpatient setting. 

Teaching and education

Dr Yap has a keen interest in medical education and holds the post as Honorary Clinical Lecturer with University of Aberdeen. She is actively involved in the design and delivery of teaching of both undergraduate medical programme and postgraduate doctors. She acts as a clinical and educational supervisor for postgraduate training doctors. She is also a Royal College of Physicians examiner for the MRCP (UK) PACES examination.

Research

Dr Yap has been involved in research and acts as the primary investigator for study of self-management in patients with adrenal insufficiency and as sub-investigator for a Phase 4 diabetes medication trial.
