Mr Prasad Karpe is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington. He sees self-funding and privately insured patients.
He is a multiple fellowship-trained spinal specialist and his fellowship training covered the full breadth of adult and paediatric spinal surgery.
This includes:

As a substantive Spinal Consultant in the NHS, his adult degenerative and deformity practice is based at the James Cook University Hospital and the University Hospital of North Tees. His practice at the children’s unit at James Cook consists of paediatric deformity correction operative procedures. Mr Karpe is currently the Paediatric Surgical Lead at James Cook University Hospital.
Mr Karpe has a special interest in degenerative spine, back pain, spinal injections and spinal deformity. His background in orthopaedic and trauma surgery spans over 2 decades, including 10 years of dedicated work in spinal surgery.
Mr Karpe undertook his training on the Northern Deanery rotation to pursue a career in Spinal Surgery. Mr Karpe passed the fellowship exam in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr & Orth) from The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
He then undertook a dedicated a year long Senior Spinal fellowship from the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital, London; a quaternary referral centre for complex spinal conditions worldwide. There, he worked closely with leading spinal surgeons.
After completing medical school at Goa Medical College in India, he undertook post-graduate training in Orthopaedics at the prestigious tertiary referral centre at Goa University. This culminated in a Master of Surgery in Orthopaedics. He then underwent spinal fellowships at Sancheti Institute in Pune and The Spine Clinic in Mumbai, India. These render specialised services in complex spinal surgery.
On completing the membership exam (MRCS) from The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, he moved to the United Kingdom. He underwent further training in spinal surgery at the University Hospital of North Tees, where he trained in a range of degenerative procedures. These include spinal fusions and disc replacements.
His structured training in the North East included a year of dedicated spine training at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Here, he trained in complex deformities, navigation, and minimally invasive surgery.
He is passionate about teaching and training to empower the next generation of surgeons. He regularly participates in the Royal College of Surgeons’ national and international exam courses. He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has published book chapters on spines in the FRCS and surgery textbooks. Mr Karpe is an active member of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons, the British Scoliosis Society and AO Spine.
He believes in a patient-centric approach and shared decision-making. He is committed to providing the best patient care and experience for all his patients and genuinely cares for their wellbeing. Mr Karpe takes time to understand their concerns, fears, and goals.
Mr Karpe is an active member of “The Spine Foundation”, a charity organisation committed to delivering essential spine care to underserved communities in rural and tribal areas of India since 1998. Through regular medical camps, the foundation brings spinal healthcare to areas with limited access to services.
