Personal Profile

Dr Paolo Giuffrida graduated from the University of Pavia, Ghislieri College, Italy in 2012. He was appointed in 2021 to his current position as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.

Immediately after Medical School, he conducted research in the lab of Prof. MacDonald at Queen Mary University of London, where he studied mucosal immunology on inflammatory bowel disease and coeliac disease. This led to his passion to become a gastroenterologist on his return to Italy, where he trained in Fondazione IRCCS San Matteo, Pavia, in conjunction with University of Milan. Dr Giuffrida participated in multiple phase 2 and 3 clinical trials on experimental drugs for patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

After his postgraduate training, he took a PhD on small bowel adenocarcinoma complicating Crohn’s disease and coeliac disease. Dr Giuffrida published ten peer-reviewed papers from this work on small bowel adenocarcinoma. During his PhD, he also developed 3D extracellular matrix platform from human bowel at UCL Institute for Liver and Digestive Health. After his PhD, Dr Giuffrida started working in the NHS, first as Gastroenterology SpR at St Mark’s Hospital, world-renowned hospital for intestinal and colorectal disorders, then as gastroenterology/endoscopy quality improvement fellow at Homerton University Hospital.

Currently, he works as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Here Dr Giuffrida led the inflammatory bowel disease service for two years. Dr Giuffrida works for outpatient clinics and elective endoscopy lists at Chase Farm Hospital and for gastrointestinal inpatients/emergency duties at Barnet Hospital. 

Dr Giuffrida served as faculty member at the United European Gastroenterology Week in 2021. He worked as guest editor of the Special Issue “Neoplastic complications of immune-mediated gastrointestinal disorders” for the Journal Cancers. Additionally, Dr Giuffrida has expertise in intestinal fibrosis, he has written the chapter “Clinical, Cellular and Serologic Biomarkers of intestinal fibrosis” in “Fibrostenotic inflammatory bowel disease”, Rieder F editor, Springer 2018. He also conducted several studies on non-invasive biomarkers and pathophysiology of intestinal fibrosis in inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr Giuffrida has over 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals, more than 1,900 citations and h-index of 28.
