About Dr Owen John Dempsey

Personal Profile

Dr Dempsey is a highly experienced Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine, with a special interest in lung conditions that cause scarring, such as lung fibrosis, asbestosis, and sarcoidosis.

He studied Medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1987 to 1992. During his studies, he was awarded a 3-month scholarship to the University of Minneapolis, where he gained valuable experience in the Respiratory and Cardiology departments. He also received several undergraduate prizes for his academic achievements.

After a year working in Glasgow, Dr Dempsey moved to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he completed a two-year rotation across various General Medicine specialties. During this time, he passed the MRCP exam (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians) on his first attempt.

He then undertook five years of specialist training as a Registrar in Respiratory and General Medicine. Midway through this, he completed an MD thesis and obtained his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training. Since 2002, he has been working as a Consultant ever since.

Dr Dempsey sees patients with all types of lung disease, but he has a particular focus on interstitial lung diseases. Alongside his clinical work, he is passionate about teaching. He regularly teaches at the bedside and in clinics, and he plays a key role at the University of Aberdeen, where he has helped develop hundreds of online case studies for medical students.

He also mentors junior doctors and physician associates, appraises fellow consultants annually (as required by the General Medical Council), and is frequently invited to give lectures to students, trainees, and healthcare professionals.

Over the past decade, r Dempsey have been an invited lecturer for the British Thoracic Society at their UK Respiratory Trainee “How to pass the Speciality Certificate Exam” training day.
