Mr Vig is a double fellowship-trained Consultant Ophthalmologist and Ophthalmic Surgeon, with subspecialty expertise in premium and complex cataract surgery, general ophthalmology, glaucoma diagnosis and management, laser treatment and glaucoma surgery. His NHS practice runs from the Western Eye Hospital in Marylebone, London.
He undertook his undergraduate medical degree at Oxford University, obtaining an additional Masters degree in physiology and winning several prizes during his studies. He initially trained in internal medicine, gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians, before winning a place on the prestigious North Thames (Moorfields) 7-year ophthalmology rotation. After becoming a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2017, Mr Vig decided to pursue glaucoma and cataract as his subspecialty interest and completed fellowships at the internationally recognised Moorfields Eye Hospital and then the Western Eye Hospital. This training, with some of the world’s leading glaucoma and cataract experts, underpins his approach to the complex/tertiary level patients he sees in his current practice. He offers the full range of premium lenses for cataract surgery including toric lenses, multifocals and EDOF lenses. He regularly gives second opinions on complex cases requested by patients and other colleagues. He also has extensive emergency/general ophthalmology experience and works as a consultant in the Western Eye A&E department.
Mr Vig prides himself on his approach to his patients, taking the time needed to understand their needs and discuss all their concerns with them. His patients know him to be empathic, communicative and willing to go the “extra mile” to get the best results. He firmly believes that intervention is not always the right decision and will be clear when he doesn’t think surgery is best option.
Mr Vig is committed to the education and training of the next generation of eye care specialists – he supervises medical students, BSc students, trainee surgeons, nurses and optometrists and has lectured on the UCL Ophthalmology MSc. He was twice awarded Teacher of the Month for Oxford University Medical School and worked with the General Medical Council for nearly 20 years, reviewing medical schools and postgraduate training across the UK. He regularly teaches and examines ophthalmology trainees across the country as they prepare for their professional exams.
He advocates and advises on patient safety, having served as the Quality and Safety lead for ophthalmology at Imperial. He currently undertakes advisory and review roles for the Medical Director of Imperial College Healthcare Trust. He is actively involved in clinical research and has presented at national and international conferences and published in peer reviewed journals. Current research focuses include outcomes after newer surgical devices and laser treatments. He is a regular invited speaker at industry-led events. Mr Vig was elected by his colleagues and peers to the Council of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, allowing him to contribute to policy and guidance at a national level.
