Professor Neil Gittoes is an internationally recognised leader in endocrinology, osteoporosis, bone and calcium disorders. He leads national programmes through NHS England in complex and severe endocrine disorders.
He is Chair of the Royal Osteoporosis Society and leads on guideline development for the management of osteoporosis and calcium disorders through the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the National Osteoporosis Group (NOGG) and the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE).
Neil is a Consultant Endocrinologist and Honorary Professor who graduated in 1990 from the University of Birmingham with BSc (Hons), MBChB (Hons), and was later awarded a PhD in Endocrinology. His contribution to clinical medicine and academic research has been recognised by the Royal College of Physicians by award of the Goulstonian Lectureship.
He has held roles as Consultant Endocrinologist, Divisional Director of Medicine and Medical Director for Integrated Care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Over the past 25 years he has developed the internationally recognised metabolic bone diseases unit in Birmingham providing care for patients across the region and nationally.
Neil has multiple international leadership roles in hypoparathyroidism and hyperparathyroidism including serving as Clinical Lead for the NICE Guideline on the Management of Primary Hyperparathyroidism (NG132), the ESE and the International Guidelines on Managing Hypoparathyroidism and Hyperparathyroidism.
His rounded, person-centred approach to all professional matters has seen him assume additional wider responsibilities to the healthcare system as Chair of the West Midlands Clinical Senate and Medical Vice Chair for the West Midlands Clinical Impact Award scheme, Department of Health and Social Care. Neil’s contributions to medical care above and beyond his job role have been recognised nationally through a Gold Award, something only 2% of consultants will achieve in their career.
Neil is on the editorial board of several endocrine-related journals. He has published over 150 papers, reviews, and chapters and lectures at national and international conferences, most recently in 2025 in San Francisco at the largest global endocrine conference. Additionally, Neil has established himself as a formidable expert witness in medicolegal practice.
Neil’s patients have consistently fedback that his approach to patient care is receptive, he listens and understands, uses clear language and explanations, actively involves patients and their families in decision making to reach agreed plans of care and follows this up with extremely timely written communication to all relevant parties.
