About Professor Neeraj Saxena

Personal Profile

After graduating in Medicine (MBBS), Professor Saxena completed postgraduate training in Anaesthesia and Pain Management (MD) at a leading centre of Delhi University before moving to the UK.

He completed his anaesthetic training across hospitals in South Wales and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA). He then undertook advanced training in Pain Management, gaining the Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FFPMRCA). During this time, he also completed an MSc in Pain Management at Cardiff University, complementing his broad clinical experience.

Professor Saxena has gained further specialist experience at several renowned pain treatment centres in the UK and internationally. He was awarded a PhD by Cardiff University for his research into human brain function using functional MRI. He also holds a Diploma in Lifestyle Medicine from the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine (USA) and a Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine from the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK).

Professor Saxena is a Consultant in Pain Management and Anaesthetics at Cwm Taf University Hospitals, where he is also Clinical Lead for Inpatient Pain Management.

He has led the development of the South Wales Network of Acute Pain Teams (SwNAP), helping to improve standards of inpatient pain management. He is currently a council member of both the Welsh Pain Society and SwNAP and has previously served on the Faculty of Pain Medicine Professional Standards Committee.

Professor Saxena is actively involved in research and has published extensively. In 2014, he was awarded a NISCHR Clinical Research Fellowship.

His main research interests include understanding the brain mechanisms involved in pain perception and improving clinical outcomes from pain treatments. He has presented his research at national and international scientific meetings and is regularly invited to speak about pain management to medical students and healthcare professionals.

He is also involved in the training and development of junior doctors at Cwm Taf hospitals who are pursuing careers in pain medicine.

Professor Saxena offers a comprehensive range of medicinal, interventional and non-surgical treatments for painful conditions. He has a particular interest and expertise in knee, shoulder and back pain.

He uses motivational interviewing and shared decision-making approaches to help patients understand their treatment options and make informed choices about their care.

Clinical Interests:

His specialist interests include interventional and non-surgical treatments for:

  • Osteoarthritis pain, including pain affecting the knee, shoulder, hip and spine
  • Muscular pain, including sports injuries and trigger points
  • Nerve pain, including sciatica, nerve entrapment, diabetic neuropathy and pain following surgery
  • Visceral pain, including endometriosis, IBS and pelvic pain

He also runs specialist clinics for fibromyalgia and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
