Dr Naresh K Buttan is a Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry and has been working as a Substantive Full-Time Consultant in the NHS since 2008. He is Section 12 (2) approved under the Mental Health Act. He works in a Substantive Consultant role at South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neurosciences (IoPPN) at Kings College London. He is GMC approved Eductional and Clinical Supervisor for Junior Doctors at various levels and provides support to them through onsite supervision, assesses them during workplace based assessments, and provides them with structured reports and feedback. He also supervises their Quality Improvement and Audit projects and leads MDT meetings at his local NHS service. He is an active member of the Local Negotiating Committee (LNC), helping to defend doctors' terms and conditions.
He is actively involved in teaching Medical Students at Kings College London as Firm Head, Educational and Clinical Supervisor. Previously, he held roles of Training Programme Director for the Higher Training Programme in General Adult/Old Age Psychiatry and for the Core Psychiatry Training Programme at South West Peninsula Post Graduate Medical Education (HEE SW PGME). He also worked with the University of Plymouth as an Honorary Fellow, Academic Tutor, and Undergraduate Psychiatry Lead for Peninsula Medical & Dental Schools. He has supervised various grades of Junior Doctors and provided high quality training and learning opportunities; including formal teaching sessions at locally run MRCPsych Courses and provided assessments, reports, and references.
He's currently working with the Royal College of Psychiatrists as an External Adviser and College Assessor. He is a member of BMA and has trained and worked as a LNC Chair previously at Livewell Southwest. He co-produced a Job Planning Policy for Consultants and Associate Speciality Doctors. He also led the development of International Medical Graduate Doctors Support Plan at Peninsula Deanery. He is actively involved in training, teaching, and workplace development in his various roles.
Prior to coming to the UK, he worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist, Deputy Medical Superintendent, and Clinical Director in Australia as well as Consultant Psychiatrist and Deputy Medical Superintendent in India. He qualified from Premier Institutes in India.
Besides his vast experience of more than 20 years in his field, his special interests included Neuropsychiatry, Transcultural Psychiatry, Migration and Mental Health, PTSD, Psychopharmacology, Epigenetics in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Mood Disorders, and Mental Health Laws. He's presented papers at conferences, written articles in public media, and given interviews to media outlets for raising awareness of mental health.
As a trained Medicolegal Expert, he has provided over a hundred medicolegal reports over last seven years for both Claimants and Defendants to various Solicitors and Agencies. His medicolegal area of expertise includes clinical negligence, injury compensation, asylum seekers and refugees' mental health, employment tribunals and workplace/occupational health. He has obtained relevant training and regularly updates his knowledge by attending relevant training/CPD events. He is a member of the Expert Witness Institute (EWI), Fellow of Expert Witness (FEW), and National Expert Witness Agency (NEWA).
