Mushtaque Ishaque

Personal Profile

Professor Ishaque is a specialist in back pain and leg pain. He regularly treats patients with back pain and leg pain (sciatica) due to nerve root pressure from common spinal conditions such as disc herniation or disc prolapse, spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis. He prides himself on treating patients in a manner in which he and his family would want to be treated and having suffered a significant disc herniation himself understands what his patients are going through.

Professor Ishaque believes that surgery should always be the last resort and will try all non-surgical options first. He is an expert in the use of needles around the spine and has pioneered the use of the laser, passed down a spinal needle to reduce the pressure on the nerves thereby reducing the pain.

Professor Ishaque has over 300 testimonials which can be viewed on his website www.thebackpainandlegpainspecialist.com.

Professor Ishaque qualified in medicine from The University of Cambridge in 1991 as well as having a First Class Degree in Clinical Pharmacology from The University of London. He completed his specialist spinal training on the two year Combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Spinal Program in Vancouver, Canada returning to the UK in 2008 to take up his substantive consultant post at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

Professor Ishaque is particularly interested in the genetics of disc degeneration having a higher doctorate in this subject and was awarded the British Orthopaedic Association’s Gold Medal as well as a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England for his research.
