Personal Profile

Mrinal Rana is a Consultant Ophthalmologist in the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust where he manages patients with cataract, cornea, external eye disease, ocular surface inflammations and dry eyes.

He has extensive Cataract and refractive Cataract Surgery experience and does complex cataracts at the NHS practice, especially patients with corneal scars, very high myopes, patients unable to lie flat due to spinal and breathing problems and those with learning difficulties and dementia, under the best interest care pathway. He is also an excellent corneal surgeon and provides corneal transplants for all types of corneal diseases.

Mrinal completed his Medical School training in India and moved to the UK to pursue his interest in Ophthalmology in 2004. He has 15 years of Ophthalmology experience with 2 Corneal Fellowships at Birmingham and Cambridge where he has enhanced his clinical competence in Cornea and External Eye Disease before starting as a Consultant in Coventry in August 2019. His Ophthalmology training took place in various renowned Tertiary Hospitals in Liverpool, Leicester, Birmingham and Cambridge, which gave him exposure to deal with diseases in various demographic groups in the UK. As disease severity is different, his understanding of the disease is much better and hence his management skills are catered to each individual. He is proficient in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi, which also helps him connect with people and communicate with them in their native language.

In his short span of 2 years at Coventry, he has built on the Cross-Linking service for NHS patients, developed a Specialist Nurse Led Dry Eye Clinic where severe dry eyes will be treated under his expert supervision. He also has a keen interest in Paediatric Cornea and supports the Paediatric Ophthalmology team with cornea related diseases in children. He has also improved upon the pathways of managing various corneal emergencies attending the University Hospital of Coventry.

He has a keen interest in Research and has multiple peer-reviewed publications and national and international presentations. He frequently lectures in the UK as well as internationally and has set up and run surgical training courses for trainee surgeons. He is also a surgical trainer for UK ophthalmology trainees

In his patient feedback in his current and previous NHS posts, he has been complimented as being a very meticulous clinician in his work, showing assiduity to his patients while treating their disease and carrying a holistic approach to their management. A recent personality review portrayed him as a creative inspiring helper, who is sympathetic, empathetic and affable.

Mrinal maintains a healthy work-life balance and is a keen badminton and tennis player. He is a keen cycling enthusiast since 2016 and in 2018 did his first 50mile Charity cycling event in support of Prostate Cancer Charity, with plans to push his boundaries by doing a 100mile event in the future. He believes in giving back to society and has volunteered at the Khmer Sight Organisation in Cambodia to provide free eye care for poor patients by running camps in villages and doing cataract and corneal surgery to improve sight. At home, he enjoys cooking and reading and is learning French as a 5th language.
