About Prof Mohamed Abdel-fattah

Personal Profile

Professor Abdel-Fattah is a highly experienced consultant specialising in urogynaecology and pelvic floor disorders.

He completed his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2007 and became the first Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) accredited subspecialist in Urogynaecology in Scotland.

Clinical Expertise

Since 2008, Professor Abdel-Fattah has worked as a Consultant in both the NHS and private practice. He has led the tertiary urogynaecology service in Grampian and the North East of Scotland for over 12 years. He accepts referrals from GPs and consultant colleagues for the full range of female pelvic floor conditions. 

Professor Abdel-Fattah also chairs the Grampian multidisciplinary team (MDT) for pelvic floor disorders, helping ensure patients receive expert, collaborative care.

Research and Teaching

Prof  Adel-fattah has an extensive academic portfolio, with numerous publications, some of which are considered benchmarking research in urogynaecology which has led numerous national multicentre clinical trials.
 
He is regularly invited as guest and keynote speaker in prestigious international conferences.
 
In-addition, Prof  Adel-fattah surgical expertise has been well respected internationally and has been invited as international expert to chair/ or as faculty in several surgical workshops worldwide.

Clinical Interests

Female Pelvic Floor Disorders including:

  • Urinary Incontinence (Stress urinary incontinence, Overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder, others),
  • Pelvic organ prolapse (prolapse of the womb and /or the vagina),
  • Painful bladder,
  • Recurrent UTI,
  • Voiding (bladder emptying) problems

Prof Abdel-fattah is proficient in undertaking all types of surgery in Urogynaecology including:

  • Prolapse: pelvic floor repairs, sacro-spinous fixation, sacro-colpo-pexy, uterine preservation surgery, hysterectomy, and others.
  • Urinary Incontinence: mid-urethral slings, colposuspension, autologous fascial slings and others

He has a special interest in minimal invasive management hence recently introduced a new Minimal invasive UroGynaecology service (MUG clinic) service in both the NHS and the private sector.

The MUG clinic offers a range of minimal invasive procedures in and out-patient setting - all to be done within the framework set by the NICE guidelines. These include:

  • Urodynamic investigations: for investigation urinary incontinence following failure of conservative or previous surgical treatment
  • Diagnostic Cystoscopy for investigating recurrent UTI, painful bladder, possible mesh related adverse events, other indications
  • Operative Cystoscopy: (under Local Anaesthetic +/- sedation)
    • Injection of  BOTOX into Bladder wall for treatment of overactive bladder refractory to conservative treatment
    • Peri-urethral injection of Bulking agents for treatment of stress urinary incontinence
  • Bladder Installations for painful bladder syndrome
  • Vaginal pessaries: for conservative management of pelvic organ prolapse
