As the Clinical Lead for General Surgery at NHS Forth Valley, he is dedicated to delivering exceptional, patient-centred surgical care while also helping to advance medical research and innovation. He also holds an additional post as a visiting Major Trauma Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital Major Trauma Centre, Imperial College Healthcare Trust, London – a role he immensely enjoys. Mr Wilson is known for his warm and approachable manner; this coupled with his meticulous surgical skills, has earned him the trust and respect of both his patients and colleagues. His main private practice is based at Kings Park hospital in Stirling, where he has an outpatient clinic and a regular surgical list
Mr Wilson is widely recognised for his expertise in laparoscopic (keyhole) gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy). He is passionate about ensuring patients receive swift, effective, and minimally invasive treatment for gallbladder-related conditions, making him one of the go-to specialists for this procedure in the region. He also has significant experience in hernia repair, performing laparoscopic surgery for both groin and abdominal wall hernias. As the lead for the complex hernia regional multidisciplinary team (MDT), he is able to perform advanced techniques, including the use of botulinum toxin (Botox) injections for complex abdominal wall reconstructions. Additionally, Mr. Wilson is highly skilled in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy; diagnosing and treating patients experiencing symptoms such as stomach pain, difficulty swallowing, acid reflux, and non-cardiac chest pain. His advanced training in anti-reflux surgery places him among a select group of surgeons in Scotland who are able to offer life-changing treatments for patients with severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and achalasia.
Mr Wilson understands the importance of treating the patient as a whole, not just their surgical condition. He therefore takes a holistic approach to patient care and believes that successful surgical outcomes go beyond the operating theatre. He works closely with an expert multidisciplinary team, including pre-assessment and clinic nurses, radiologists, anaesthetists, and physiotherapists, to ensure patients receive comprehensive care. Recognising the impact of lifestyle factors in surgical outcomes, he actively supports patients with smoking cessation, weight management, and overall wellbeing strategies to reduce their peri-operative risk profile, enhance their recovery and long-term health and wellbeing.
Research and innovation are at the heart of Mr. Wilson's practice. He is a firm advocate for patient involvement in medical research, ensuring that patients have a greater voice in shaping the future of surgical treatments and healthcare services. He is involved in multiple high-impact research initiatives, whilst his dedication to research is instrumental in shaping national policies and guidelines, refining surgical techniques and setting benchmarks for excellence in the field.
Mr Wilson is also known for his expertise in treating patients with a higher body mass index (BMI). He recognises the unique challenges faced by this patient group, and ensures they receive compassionate care. He also uses tailored surgical techniques that takes into account their specific needs. He works closely with his team to provide guidance on weight management both before and after surgery, helping to improve long-term health and surgical success.
In addition to his technical expertise, Mr Wilson is kind and empathetic, and takes a patient-focused approach to treatment. He has a unique ability to listen, and takes the time to ensure his patients fully understand their diagnosis and treatment options. This level of care helps his patients feel informed, reassured, and supported throughout their treatment journey.
He is highly liked and respected by his peers, and is actively involved in surgical training and mentorship. He is a faculty member of the Definitive Surgical Trauma Skills course, a consultant appraiser, and holds key positions in national surgical organisations, including the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (ASGBI) and the British Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society (BBUGSS). Outside of his clinical career, Mr. Wilson serves as a Consultant Surgeon in the Royal Navy Reserves Healthcare & Medical specialisation, holding the role of SO1 Medical Officers. He brings his professional expertise to military medicine, supporting the health and operational readiness of UK service personnel. He is the only consultant general surgeon within the Royal Navy Reserves, demonstrating his dedication to service both in and outside of the hospital.
Away from work, he is a devoted family man; he enjoys spending time with his partner and three children. He has a passion for travel and gastronomy, seeking out holiday destinations renowned for their fine food and wine and exploring culinary traditions from around the world.
