About Michael Glynn
Personal Profile
Dr Michael Glynn is a Consultant Physician with special interests in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Clinical Nutrition. He trained at Cambridge and St Mary’s qualifying in 1977 and achieving Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in 1993.
His research into protein metabolism in patients on intravenous feeding gained him an MD from Cambridge in 1995. He continued to take part in emergency duties for Acute Medical Emergencies until the end of 2015.
Dr Glynn has maintained expertise as a very general Gastroenterologist but has particular experience of general Hepatology as well as Clinical Nutrition. He leads the Nutrition and Intestinal Failure Support Team at Barts Health, managing the care of about 100 patients with complex GI diseases who also need intravenous feeding at home.
Dr Glynn is in demand as a medico-legal expert within the fields of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He produces over 60 reports annually in Clinical Negligence, Personal Injury and Coroner’s cases
He has been a Consultant at Barts Health (Royal London Hospital) since 1988 and was also at Newham Hospital from 1988-96. He was Clinical Director for Medical and Emergency at the Royal London Hospital from 1999-2008.
Dr Glynn has a major interest in Postgraduate Medical Education. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary, has been both Regional Adviser and Censor of the Royal College of Physicians of London. From 2008-2013 he was Director of the North East Thames Foundation School, at any one time directing the training of over 700 Foundation Doctors during their first two years of work after graduating. He is now the Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee at The London Independent Hospital, which oversees the quality of all the consultant work at the hospital.
From the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, after a 40 year career as a GI Endoscopist specialising in ERCP, he stopped doing endoscopy himself, and now refers patients onward to highly expert colleagues for any procedures that are needed.
From 2013 to 2016 he was the National Clinical Director for GI and Liver Diseases within NHS England. This role involved giving advice about the commissioning of services for patients with GI and Liver diseases at the highest level of the English NHS. He is co-editor of Hutchison’s Clinical Methods, one of the oldest and most fundamental undergraduate medical textbooks, now in its 25th edition.
