Having been appointed as a Consultant in Sheffield in 1997, Mr Flowers has continued his full-time NHS commitment in the Sheffield Children’s NHSFT where he is currently the Departmental Lead for Coding for transition and the Deputy Clinical Director for the Division of Surgery and Critical Care, and at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHSFT as the Senior Foot and Ankle Surgeon with a neuromuscular interest.
He has developed sub-speciality paediatric orthopaedic experience in hip dysplasia - leading the hip scanning clinic, in talipes, the Ponseti clinic in spinal dysraphism and myelomeningocoele and having established a sport-injury clinic, in sport-related conditions of the knee, ankle and foot.
His adult orthopaedic interests are in the foot and ankle, covering the breadth of this sub-speciality and including minimally invasive surgery, ankle arthroscopy, surgery for ankle instability, pes planus, the cavovarus foot, arthritis of the foot and ankle, hallux valgus (bunions), Morton metatarsalgia and claw toes. He also has extensive experience in the surgical care of neuromuscular conditions in adulthood.
Mr Flowers has a continued and active involvement in clinically-based research as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sheffield. He is also a reviewer for peer-reviewed foot and ankle journals.
He provides expert opinion for medicolegal and negligence purposes, with experience developed over the past 23 years. He is also a member of the Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Senate Assembly, an adviser to NICE and NHS England.
Mr Flowers' private practice is based at Thornbury Hospital where he leads the Foot and Ankle service - a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary team providing assessments, imaging, orthotic support, physiotherapy and a broad range of surgical interventions for the full spectrum of foot and ankle conditions.
