Manoj Nair has more than two and a half decades of experience in the diagnosis and management of commonly presenting gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, altered bowel habit, rectal bleeding, anorexia, abdominal distension, anaemia. bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, heartburn, gallbladder disorders, nausea, regurgitation, vomiting, and weight loss.  

He is one of the earliest endoscopist to get JAG (Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy) accredited in Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy (OGD) since its inception. He has undergone JAG accredited advanced colonoscopic, and therapeutic endoscopic training. He is a colonoscopy trainer and has developed an interest and expertise in GI Endoscopy. This includes diagnostic colonoscopy for polyp detection, Inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer, functional bowel disorders including irritable bowel syndrome, and therapeutic colonoscopy for polyp removal, ano rectal bleeding and diagnostic endoscopy for dyspepsia and reflux including helicobacter, gastric and duodenal ulcers etc.  

He regularly manages patients with colonic polyps, anal fissures, haemorrhoids, pilonidal sinus, anal fistula, diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome etc.  

Mr Nair’s routine general surgical practice include conditions like abdominal wall hernia including groin hernias (inguinal hernia, femoral hernia etc), gall bladder pathology including stones, polyps and minor surgeries like removal of superficial lumps, skin lesions under local anaesthesia.  

He is a Consultant at North Middlesex University Hospital, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, and an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University College London. He holds fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Colorectal Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is a member of the British Hernia Society, Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI), Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), and the faculty of surgical trainers, UK.  

Mr Nair started his general surgical career in 1997. Recognised as the best outgoing trainee for his master’s in general surgery, Mr Nair’s training has been enriched by collaborating with some of the finest clinicians and surgeons across England, Wales and India. He has undergone Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) accredited national surgical fellowship in colorectal surgery. His diverse experience enables him to provide his patients with a range of options tailored to their individual needs and circumstances. He is committed to patient-centred care in the light of current best evidence.

He has over two decades of experience in elective and emergency general and colorectal surgery and is adept in both open and minimally invasive approaches to a variety of general surgical conditions.  

Patient Centred Approach

Mr Nair works within a multidisciplinary team comprising nurses, radiologists, anaesthetists, histopathologists, microbiologists, and administrative assistants. This collaborative effort ensures a comprehensive and holistic approach to patient care. His patients can be rest assured that all advice he provides is with their health and satisfaction in mind. Although Mr Nair is a surgeon, he does try to avoid investigations / operations if he honestly does not feel that they would be in the patient’s best interests. He aspires to be as ‘fair and transparent’ as possible. He will never operate upon nor see patients outside of his field of expertise, he is happy to arrange ‘second opinions’ for difficult cases, refer to appropriate specialist if required. 

A Focus on Innovation and Education

As the clinical guidelines and pathways lead for General Surgery, he champions streamlined disease-specific management, ensuring patients receive the most effective care. His contributions as a co-author of novel guidelines, including the Royal Society of Medicine award-winning guideline on the management of surgical abdomen in pregnancy, reflect his commitment to shaping the future of surgical care.

He is actively involved in teaching and training undergraduate medical and postgraduate surgery trainees. He is the Clerkship director and Educational Lead for Surgery at North Middlesex University hospital. He is an undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (FRCS) examiner in General Surgery. Mr Nair has published extensively on clinically relevant topics and was awarded grants from various national and international training research and professional bodies like the London deanery, Frank Taylor Memorial Trust, ASI etc. He has supported several of his trainees to publish and present at national and international platforms. Academic papers of clinical relevance co-authored by him has received prizes at International and National conferences like ASGBI,  ASI , Association of Surgeons in Training and more.
