Personal Profile

Mr Mamun Rahman is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Cataract and Glaucoma for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. His main commitments are at two Glasgow hospitals: the New Stobhill Hospital, and the New Victoria Infirmary.  He works privately at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead  in Glasgow. He is one of the most Senior Eye Surgeons at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead, and is currently the Ophthalmology representative on the Medical Advisory Committee. He is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Ophthalmology (registration number 6048722). 

He is a very experienced cataract surgeon and has performed over 7500 cataract operations. He is committed to excellence in practise and continually audits his surgery, which is currently 8 times safer than the audit safety standard for cataract surgery (audited 14/6/26, based on 7542 consecutive cases).

He is a Regional Expert in minimally invasive surgeries (MIGS) and non surgical laser treatments for glaucoma such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT). He has performed over 1000 glaucoma surgeries , and more iStent procedures for the treatment of glaucoma, than any other surgeon in Scotland. This makes him amongst the most experienced in this type of surgery in the U.K. He was the first surgeon in Scotland to be certified in the iStent Infinite and has been awarded Expert status for his extensive experience. He is also one of the most experienced surgeons in Scotland for private Glaucoma Laser Treatments, such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty.  

His previous research work has been awarded prizes at national level by professional organisations such as the UKEGS and the SOC. 

He has an interest in teaching  and is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Glasgow Medical School where he is in involved with the teaching programme for South Glasgow. Mr Rahman is also an official Examiner for the FRCS (Ophthalmology) examinations. A Dundonian by birth, he completed his undergraduate training at Edinburgh Medical School. His ophthalmic training was undertaken at the Internationally respected Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow during which time he was the recipient of the Pfizer Ophthalmology Medal. He has also broadened his knowledge with training in famous institutions such as the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, U.S.A.
