Mr Nessim is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, the Clinical Director at Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre and a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Aston Medical School. He graduated from The University of Alexandria, Egypt and following this, moved to the United Kingdom where he completed his basic residency ophthalmology training in South Wales and Boston gaining vast experience in general ophthalmology. He also finished his higher training in ophthalmology in the West Midlands. He then undertook two highly esteemed surgical glaucoma fellowships at Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) and the prestigious world-renowned fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

He is the current director of glaucoma services at BMEC - the supra-regional centre for ophthalmology. He takes on referrals from his colleagues for managing complex glaucoma conditions with specialist interest in angle closure, neovascular glaucoma following diabetes and vascular occlusion. He also manages ocular surface disease patients. He has performed several thousand cataract operations with great success, and is vastly experienced in glaucoma filtration surgery, including augmented trabeculectomy and aqueous tube shunts. He has performed many state-of-the-art minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) both as a stand-alone or combined with cataract surgery. He is an expert in using glaucoma laser surgery including selective laser trabeculoplasty, YAG and cyclodiode lasers. 

Mr Nessim is also interested in teaching and has 20 previously published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as contributions to a textbook. He has presented at many national and international conferences including the American Academy of Ophthalmology. As well as this, Mr Nessim is regularly invited to speak at and moderate international educational sessions. He is an examiner for both postgraduate and undergraduate medical students.

Mr Nessim co-founded The Global Education & Research Society of Ophthalmology (GERSO) - a worldwide initiative for free and accessible eye education for all. He has formed an international network of experts in the field of cataract & glaucoma in the view of educating ophthalmologists worldwide.

He has mentored and trained more than 20 national and international glaucoma fellows in using modern-day techniques whilst working at BMEC.

He has also been invited to become a visiting glaucoma consultant at the Watany Eye Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, one of the leading eye hospitals across the Middle East, where he provides glaucoma surgical services catering to the most complex cases in the Middle East. 

Some of his notable charitable works within the field include ‘The Khmer sight foundation’ in Cambodia, as well as Eye Charity in Egypt. 

Mr Nessim’s aim is to provide the best standard of care to his patients whether they are attending for glaucoma, cataract consultation or surgery by involving the patients in their care in an informed manner. All his patients receive the most up to date, suitable treatment, tailored to their conditions and each of their individual needs.
