Mr Pawlak’s medical journey began at the Medical University of Gdańsk, where he earned his medical degree and specialised in general surgery. He then pursued advanced training in Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) and complex abdominal wall surgery (AWS) at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in Scotland. To further hone his expertise, he trained at several renowned international centres, including the Lichtenstein Amid Hernia Clinic at UCLA in Los Angeles, the Department of Innovation and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío in Seville, Spain, and the Hanse Chirurgie Clinic in Hamburg, Germany.
Before his current role, Mr Pawlak served as a consultant surgeon for five years, during which he played a crucial role in developing and leading the North Devon Comprehensive Hernia Centre. His leadership there significantly enhanced the centre’s capabilities, providing patients with access to top-tier hernia surgery services.
With a deep commitment to providing the highest standard of care, Mr Pawlak has developed a comprehensive and individualised approach to hernia surgery. He is proficient in a wide range of techniques, from complex robotic-assisted abdominal wall surgeries to minimally invasive inguinal hernia repairs and traditional tissue repairs. Mr Pawlak is not only a skilled clinician but also a significant contributor to the development and implementation of surgical guidelines. He is a member of the HerniaSurge group, which developed the Groin Hernia Guidelines, and serves as co-lead for the European Hernia Society (EHS) guidelines on the treatment of incisional hernias. Additionally, he is a steering committee member for the development of emergency incisional hernia guidelines and collaborates with the EurA CPIP Group on investigating and treating chronic postoperative inguinal pain.
Mr Pawlak’s dedication to advancing medical research and education is evident through his numerous research publications on hernias, abdominal wall reconstruction, and upper GI surgery. His research focuses on improving surgical techniques and patient outcomes, ensuring that patients benefit from the latest advancements in hernia surgery. He earned his Ph.D. in Medicine from the Medical University of Gdańsk, where he conducted pioneering research on the forces acting on implants anchored to the anterior abdominal wall.
Recognised as an excellent teacher and mentor, Mr Pawlak organises national and international hands-on courses, including step-by-step technique and cadaver courses. He is also a renowned proctor in minimally invasive hernia surgery, providing valuable guidance and training to the next generation of surgeons.
His expertise is widely recognised, and he is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences. Additionally, Mr Pawlak volunteers with Operation Hernia and HerniaHelp, participating in surgical charity missions in Ghana and Haiti to provide much-needed surgical care to underserved populations.
Mr Pawlak is deeply committed to patient-centred care, focusing on improving quality of life by offering individualised treatment plans. He assists patients with hernias and postoperative inguinal pain worldwide and actively participates in patient forums on social media and online platforms such as HerniaTalk, the Hernia Patients Support Group, and HerniaU.
