Dr Liam Patrick Blaney

Consultant in Pain Management

About Dr Liam Patrick Blaney

Personal Profile

Liam Blaney is a Consultant in Pain Medicine at the Priory Hospital Birmingham and at the University Hospital Queen Elizabeth NHS Trust Birmingham. He has been the Clinical Lead for Pain at the University Hospital for the past 8 years.

In this role, he has been instrumental in the establishment of a fully Multi-Disciplinary Approach to the Management of Pain of all types. He has established a dedicated Neuropathic Pain Clinic to allow for the early diagnosis and treatment of Nerve Injury pain which is notoriously resistant to normal treatments.

His particular interest is in the management of persistent and intractable pain which by its nature causes distress and reduced function in every affected individual. He aims where possible to facilitate diagnosis and to institute treatments that will in most instances reduce pain, speed recovery and diminish the impact of the pain on the individual's life as a whole.

These treatments range from simple advice through to medication change and injections and will often involve the close involvement of the Physiotherapy service.  Dr Blaney will work in close collaboration with your G.P as well as all other Consultants involved in your care.

Dr Blaney gained his  Medical Degree from the  University College Dublin in 1987 and moved to the UK to undertake training in Anaesthesia which he completed through the Birmingham School of Anaesthesia in 1997.

It was during this training that he developed a Specialist Interest in the field of Pain Medicine and to further develop that interest spent a year as a Pain Fellow in Perth, Western Australia. He returned to the UK to take up a Consultant post in Anaesthesia and Pain Management but due to expansion of the Pain Service he now dedicates all of his time to the area of Pain Medicine.

Dr Blaney assesses on average 700 new patients each year and performs up to 1000 procedures which range from simple injections through to complex spinal procedures.

In his spare time, Dr Blaney is a keen sportsman enjoying running, football and equestrian pursuits. He is still pursuing an elusive 90-minute half-marathon.

Also works at Circle Rehabilitation Birmingham.
