About Professor Laurence Lovat

Personal Profile

Professor Lovat trained at University College London as a doctor. He also gained a BSc with first class honours in Nutrition before undertaking his clinical training at the top London teaching hospitals. He was awarded his PhD in 1997 from the Hammersmith Hospital (now part of Imperial College London). He was appointed as a consultant gastroenterologist at UCLH in 1999 and became professor of gastroenterology at UCL in 2014.

Professor Lovat’s early research focused on complications of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) where he developed novel endoscopic therapies for prevention of oesophageal cancer. Through this he developed an international reputation for managing Barrett’s oesophagus. He later moved into artificial intelligence and developed novel AI tools for detecting polyps in the colon during colonoscopy. These tools are now in routine use in hospitals worldwide. He continues to innovate in endoscopy and colonoscopy. 

Professor Lovat has supervised many PhD students and also mentors more junior consultant colleagues.
