About Dr Laura Blackmore

Personal Profile

Dr Blackmore is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist in London. She has almost 20 years’ experience and has a deeply empathic approach to patient care.

Dr Blackmore completed her undergraduate medical training at Cambridge University in 2002, graduating with a first-class degree and numerous awards and prizes. She moved to Oxford University for her clinical degree, which she completed in 2005. After completing her pre-registration training at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, she moved to London to complete her specialist Hepatology training at the prestigious unit at King’s College Hospital, and inflammatory bowel disease and Gastroenterology training at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. She is an accredited Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, as well as a skilled, JAG-accredited diagnostic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopist. 

In 2013, she was awarded a highly prestigious Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship and completed her PhD in the immunology of alcohol-related liver disease at King’s College Hospital in London. She has presented her work at various national and international conferences and has several peer-reviewed publications. 

Dr Blackmore has a passion for medical education and for improving patient care through targeted service development. Dr Blackmore taught as a lecturer on the PassPACES course, and was an honorary college tutor in Oxford, teaching clinical skills to more junior colleagues. She has won numerous awards for her teaching. She continues to take pride in her role as an educational and clinical supervisor. She is a qualified endoscopy trainer and enjoys training resident doctors in endoscopy.

Dr Blackmore became a Consultant at Lewisham Hospital in 2021 and since then has developed a very successful and award-winning Alcohol and Substance Misuse Care Team within the hospital. She is actively involved in clinical research and is the principal investigator at Lewisham Hospital for the NIHR-funded BOPPP trial. She has several NHS leadership and management responsibilities, including a recent appointment as clinical lead for Hepatology at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. She commenced private practice at Blackheath Hospital in 2024.

When she is not busy being a Gastroenterologist, Dr Blackmore enjoys cycling on her bike that goes nowhere, baking, and most of all spending time with her family.

Clinical Interests

Dr Blackmore manages a broad range of gastrointestinal and liver conditions, with a particular interest in alcohol- and non-alcohol-related liver disease, abnormal liver function tests and complications of cirrhosis. 

Although she has a particular interest in liver disease, she runs a full and comprehensive gastroenterology practice, and treats all conditions relating to the gastrointestinal tract including inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, change in bowel habit/rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and irritable bowel syndrome. 

Dr Blackmore is known for her very empathic approach to patient care and believes strongly in treating the patient as an individual, in line with best, evidence-based practice.
