He has maintained an interest in trauma and since 1997 has been one of the Track Medical Officers for Newcastle Diamonds Motorcycle Speedway Team. Here, he provides immediate pre-hospital medical care for incidents and accidents occurring during home meetings.
Mr Gunning has worked from Woodlands Hospital in Darlington since it opened in 2001, performing weekly outpatient clinics and regular endoscopy and surgical lists.
