Personal Profile

Mr Gunning graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1986 having studied medicine. He underwent basic surgical training in Newcastle, Manchester and Leicester, and in 1993 travelled to Sydney, Australia, to take up a fellowship in Trauma Surgery. This led to the co-authorship of a book, 'Trauma Rules', which was subsequently translated into Italian and Japanese.

He returned to the Newcastle higher surgical training rotation in 1995 and was appointed a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Darlington Memorial Hospital from 1999 to 2014. During that time, he developed the colorectal service and led the introduction of laparoscopic colorectal surgery, nurse endoscopy and the multidisciplinary approach to colorectal cancer care to the Darlington colorectal unit. Mr Gunning currently participates in the general surgical on-call rota at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and performs endoscopy at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. Both units are part of the South Tees NHS Trust.

He has maintained an interest in trauma and since 1997 has been one of the Track Medical Officers for Newcastle Diamonds Motorcycle Speedway Team, providing immediate pre-hospital medical care for incidents and accidents occurring during home meetings.

Mr Gunning has attended Woodlands Hospital in Darlington since it opened in 2001, performing weekly outpatient clinics and regular endoscopy and surgical lists.
