Dr Kate Kerr
GP with interest in Specialist Menopause Care
MBBS, BSc Psychology, MRCGP, DRCOG, DFFP, Advanced Certificate of Specialist Menopause Care
Practices at: Bath Clinic
She originally trained in General Practice and became a GP partner as well as being an Associate Specialist in Sexual Health for many years. She gained extra qualifications including the Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Diploma of Sexual and Reproductive Health and she has also completed extra training in Psychosexual Medicine.
She then joined Bath Fertility Centre (now known as CARE Fertility Bath) in 2008 and has very much enjoyed working in both Reproductive Medicine and Assisted Conception. She went on to gain the Advanced Certificate of Specialist Menopause Care in order to enhance the local service for patients who have been diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency or early menopause. She won Best Poster presentation at the British Menopause Society meeting 2019 for highlighting the need for ongoing hormonal care of patients who were seen in a fertility setting for egg donor treatment.
She also became aware that there was a gap in specialist menopause care for patients who have experienced menopause related problems secondary to their cancer treatments. She therefore, as part of a multidisciplinary team including herself, a local breast and ovarian oncologist and a cancer nurse specialist set up a new NHS service to address this need. They received an award for Improving Patient Experience in March 2020. This is one of the only NHS Combined Specialist Menopause/ Oncology clinics within the UK. They have offered training and support to other colleagues to try and help improve access to similar clinics in other areas.
She offers a private General Specialist Menopause Clinic at the BMI Bath Clinic since 2018. This is for women who are unable to access the menopause care they desire on the NHS or have more complex medical needs. She is happy to accept self referrals.
Kate loves her job and thinks of it as a joy and privilege. She enjoys seeing a huge variety of patients including those of all ages, cultures, and sexualities. Her experience in General Practice, Sexual Health, Reproductive Medicine over the last 20 years have facilitated a natural path into specialist menopause care. She tries to approach each consultation with kindness, non judgment and an open mind. Her international school background and psychology degree also contribute to her prejudice free and holistic approach to care.
Her goal is to provide high quality medical care with compassion, humanity and empathy. She believes that everyone deserves an individualised assessment and treatment plan.
She continues to strive to improve both NHS and private access to specialist menopause care for all women and remains in conversation with the local health authorities to try and improve funding of these services. She has also spoken at a number of charity events to increase awareness of availability of treatment in order to facilitate women to make their own informed choices.
