Personal Profile

Mr Sillah is a consultant general and upper gastrointestinal surgeon at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals in the West Midlands. He has advanced minimally invasive surgical skills and is regarded by his peers and the wider staff for delivering safe, compassionate and high quality care to all patients under his care.

Mr Sillah is on the GMC specialist register. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Shanghai Medical University, China and remains fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He completed his postgraduate and specialist training in a structured national training program in the UK. Mr Sillah is fully trained in Bariatric or weight loss surgery after completion of a national fellowship in bariatric surgery in Sunderland and has consultant level experience in Birmingham.

Mr Sillah is passionate about surgical training in the UK and in West Africa. He is a ‘firm lead’ for University of Birmingham and Aston University medical students rotating in his current Trust. He is a GMC recognised assigned Educational Supervisors for junior doctors. Mr Sillah is one of the lead surgeons in his charity group (Afro-European Medical Research Network) that provides free healthcare and operations for vulnerable people in Sierra Leone and Kenya. He is actively involved in improving healthcare and training in West Africa through regional conference presentations at the West Africa College of Surgeons conferences, voluntary mentoring of trainees for their college membership examinations and capacity building through technical training during volunteer field expeditions in heavily deprived communities.

Clinical Interests

His interests encompasses gall bladder surgery (including difficult gall bladders), operation for hiatus hernia, anti-reflux surgery, abdominal wall and groin hernias. In addition, Mr Sillah delivers innovative and equally effective techniques in groin hernia surgery, like the Desarda repair, to best serve patients who are unable to have repairs with prosthetic materials or mesh.
