Understanding Psychosexual Therapy
Psychosexual therapy is a specialist form of talking therapy that helps people with sexual, intimacy, and relationship concerns. It looks at how physical health, emotions, thoughts, past experiences, relationships, and cultural factors can all influence sexual wellbeing.
Sessions involve structured, guided conversations — not physical examinations — and take place in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space. You will be able to talk openly about your concerns and goals at a pace that feels comfortable.
Therapy may include education, practical strategies, communication work for couples, and tailored exercises to try between sessions. These are always discussed and agreed with you first.
As a qualified GP as well as a psychosexual therapist, Dr Rajeswaran is able to recognise when symptoms may have a medical or hormonal cause. Where appropriate, she can advise what medical assessment or treatment may be helpful and will write to your GP — or recommend a private GP review — so further investigations or management can be arranged. This allows medical and psychological care to work together.
Psychosexual therapy is collaborative and goal-focused, designed to help you build understanding, confidence, and healthier patterns in your sexual and relationship life.
Common Patient Questions
Will there be a physical examination?
No. Psychosexual therapy consultations do not include physical examination. If medical assessment is indicated, you will be advised to see your GP or a specialist, and a letter can be provided outlining suggested tests.
Could my medical condition or medication be affecting my sex life?
Yes. Many medical conditions and treatments can affect sexual function and desire. These factors are carefully reviewed as part of your assessment.
Do you only see couples?
No. I see individual adults as well as couples. I also work with people in non-traditional and consensual non-monogamous relationship structures, including polyamorous relationships. All clients are welcomed in a respectful, supportive, and non-judgmental space.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on your goals and concerns. A plan is agreed collaboratively.
