Julie completed her training in General Surgery with a Special Interest in Breast and was subsequently appointed Senior Lecturer, then Consultant Breast Surgeon at the Western Infirmary Glasgow in 1998. In 2012 the Breast unit transferred to Gartnaval Hospital, where she currently works as an NHS consultant.
She has always been passionate about the management of Breast Cancer and was awarded her MD Thesis from The University of Liverpool on the Regional Management of Locally Advanced and Recurrent Breast Cancer. Although a busy NHS Consultant, she was appointed a Trustee of the Association of Breast Surgeons (ABS) in 1998 and worked as a trustee until 2023. She has held many senior National positions including Chair of the Education and Training Committee. She was appointed President of ABS from 2019 to 2021, where she developed the guidance for the management of breast cancer patients during Covid.
She has published extensively on Breast Cancer Management; during the last 10 years alone publishing in excess of 70 Book Chapters, Papers, and Abstracts. She has recently written the chapter ‘Breast Assessment, the MDT and the role of the Breast Surgeon in Multi Modal Care’ to be published in the Oxford Textbook of Breast Cancer
Following on from her published research on The Patterns of Recurrence in Breast Cancer, she was invited to speak Internationally (visiting all Continents with the exception of Antarctica), at several Prestigious Centres, including The John Wayne Cancer Institute of California, The Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and gave The Centenary Lecture for the Royal Danish College of Surgeons.
She continues to be involved in many Post-Graduate Educational Meetings for young and established Breast Surgeons and in recognition was awarded an Honorary Senior Lectureship at The University of East Anglia. She is an elected member of the British Breast Group and hosted their meeting in Glasgow in 2013. Juie loves the theatre and is a supporter of the Citizens theatre.
