About Dr Jonathan Rajan

Personal Profile

Dr Rajan works within a complex pain medicine service seeing both secondary and tertiary referrals, which number around 2000 per year. He works within an interdisciplinary team and has a sub-specialist interest in radiofrequency denervation procedures, complex metabolic pain conditions, fibromyalgia and regularly leads specialist clinics in facial pain and complex regional pain syndrome. He is also joint lead for the radiofrequency denervation service.

Dr Rajan has a varied scope of interventional pain practice, both within the NHS and out with. One of his standout clinical skills lie in advanced regenerative medicine and pain relieving procedures. These include cutting edge radiofrequency techniques for back pain, refractory knee pain and patients who are not fit for knee replacement (using genicular denervation) as well as hip and sacroiliac denervation.

He is also able to help patients thorough platelet rich plasma regenerative medicine techniques for joint pain and muscle tears. Pulsed radiofrequency techniques are also an area of interest, allowing Dr Rajan to treat peripheral nerve pain for instance in headaches and persistent groin pain after surgery. He regularly performs a range of procedures, including facet joint injections, cervical, thoracic and lumbar epidurals, nerve root blocks, transforaminal injections, continuous, cooled and pulsed radiofrequency procedures, coeliac and lumbar plexus blocks, as well as occipital and suprascapular blocks. 

Dr Rajan is one of 4 consultants responsible for acute pain cover of a large secondary and tertiary institution with some quaternary patients in terms of metabolic medicine and intestinal failure. He provides acute pain medicine expertise for trauma patients, with a range of interventional procedures such as erector spinae, serratus anterior, paravertebral and thoracic epidural blocks. Dr Rajan also provides acute pain cover for upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery, complex spines, neurosurgery, orthopaedics as well as urology.

Research activity

Dr Rajan is a member of the Human Pain Research Group - an established and world leading group looking at functional techniques of measuring and interpreting pain responses. He also works in a non-NHS based capacity on a range of research projects with MAC clinical research.

As Lead Pain Medicine Supervisor and the Faculty Lead for Pain Education in the North West, Dr Rajan is responsible for the provision of training for undergraduate medical students, through to the training of Advanced Pain Medicine fellows in the last stages of training. Dr Rajan is an Honorary Lecturer for The University of Manchester and an Academic Advisor.
